What are Addition Properties?

Addition properties are special rules about how addition works. These rules are always true!

The most important property for Grade 1 is called the "Commutative Property" - which is a fancy way of saying "Order doesn't matter!"

This means you can add numbers in any order and get the same answer!

For example:

  • 3 + 5 = 8
  • 5 + 3 = 8 (same answer!)
  • 2 + 7 = 9
  • 7 + 2 = 9 (same answer!)

Visual Example

First Way:

2 + 4=6
🟦🟦 + 🟦🟦🟦🟦 = 6

Switched Way:

4 + 2=6
🟦🟦🟦🟦 + 🟦🟦 = 6

Same answer! Order doesn't matter!
