Introduction to Subtraction

Subtraction is when we take away or remove things from a group to find out how many are left.

When we subtract, we are finding out how many things remain after taking some away. It's like removing things from a group.

In real life, we use subtraction all the time:

• Counting how many toys are left after giving some away
• Finding how many cookies remain after eating some
• Counting how many students are left after some go home
