Introduction to Combining Like Terms

Like terms are terms that have the same variable raised to the same power. Combining like terms is a fundamental skill for simplifying algebraic expressions.

Like terms can be combined by adding or subtracting their coefficients while keeping the variable part the same.

For example, 3x and 5x are like terms because they both have the variable x. However, 3x and 3y are not like terms because they have different variables.
