Introduction to Unit Rates

A unit rate is a special type of ratio that compares a quantity to one unit of another quantity. Unit rates help us compare prices, speeds, and many other real-world measurements.

A unit rate answers the question: "How much per one?"

Examples of unit rates include miles per hour, cost per item, or calories per serving. The word "per" means "for each one" and signals a unit rate.
